After nearly 13 years at IMPAR since its founding, Sonia now leads the Spain team and the Project Management area globally.

MARCH 25, 2026

Her day-to-day work involves building teams, coordinating disciplines, and helping highly complex projects move forward within their time, cost, and quality goals. It is a role where planning is essential, but so is knowing how to adapt when a project takes an unexpected turn.

We spoke with her about Project Management, planning, and what it means to lead projects where every decision needs to be considered from multiple perspectives.

A big part of my work is building the right teams and defining the resources each project needs. We work from a multidisciplinary perspective, so it is essential to understand which profiles are needed, how they connect with one another, and how we can help everyone move toward a shared goal.

My role is largely about organizing that complexity: coordinating disciplines, anticipating needs, and making sure the project keeps moving forward without losing sight of its main objectives.

Our Management team is made up mainly of architects. Architectural training gives us a broad, human-centered perspective on each project, which we complement with financial, construction, and management expertise.

That combination allows us to understand the project from several angles: technical, financial, operational, and human. It is not just about controlling schedules or costs, but about making decisions that keep all stakeholders aligned.

Planning is essential. We use all the technology available to us, from planning and management tools to CAD and BIM, but for me, what really matters is not the software. It is the methodology.

I always say we need to be very Germanic when we plan and very Mediterranean when we react. We need a clear, organized, and detailed structure, but we also need the ability to step outside the plan when the reality of the project requires it and, most importantly, know how to get back to it.

It may sound paradoxical, but we need to plan for the unexpected. Our accumulated experience allows us to anticipate the kinds of situations that may come up and build enough flexibility into the plan to absorb them without losing sight of the goal.

The key is making sure a surprise does not automatically become a crisis. That requires methodology, judgment, and a team that can respond in a coordinated way.
